Simojovelhyus pocitosense is based on a mandibular fragment , from an unnamed Late Oligocene formation, in an amber mine near Simojovel, in northwestern Chiapas, Mexico.

I was recently informed by scientist Donald Prothero that S. pocitosense is now thought to be a pygmy peccary, and not a helohyid.
